Obituary

Alec T. Monroe [Age 71], a resident of Little Rocky Run in Clifton, Virginia died on February 20, 2008 of lymphoma.  Mr. Monroe is survived by a daughter, Anne, and two sons, Craig and James.   He was born in Menominee, Michigan and raised in Marinette, Wisconsin.  His parents and a brother preceded him in death.

 

Following service in Germany with the US Army Security Agency, Mr. Monroe graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in Political Science.  He was also a graduate of the Harvard Business School [PMD 30], the Federal Executive Institute, and the National War College [1987].

 

The CIA recruited him in 1963 as an analyst in support of satellite reconnaissance activities.  He entered CIA’s junior officer’s training program in 1966 and subsequently specialized in administrative work.  His various assignments included Chief of Recruitment, Chief of Staffing, Chief of Travel Services, and Deputy Director of Personnel for Employee Benefits and Services.  He also played a key role in the Continuity-of-Government program of the U.S. Intelligence Community during the 1980s. 

Mr. Monroe traveled extensively throughout the world during his CIA career. 
He retired in 1992 as a member of CIA’s Senior Intelligence Service.

 

During his retirement, he did extensive research on his family history and established contacts with a number of distant relatives.  He was also active in civic affairs.  He served for three years as the chairman of a group of 50 civic associations in the western part of the Springfield supervisory district of Fairfax County.  He also served for five years as President of the Little Rocky Run homeowners association, one of the larger developments in Fairfax County.  He was affectionately referred to as the "Mayor" of Little Rocky Run.

 

A funeral mass will be offered at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, located at 6720 Union Mill Road in Clifton, Virginia on Monday February 25, 2008 at 2PM.

 

Interment will be in the family plot in Riverside Cemetery in Menominee, Michigan, at a date to be scheduled in the Spring.
