Dear Little Rocky Run Union Mill Elementary School Parents,
At the September 2022 Board of Trustees meeting, a resident identified a continuous violation of the fire lane (VA Code 27-98, Fairfax County CRP, Table 503.2.1.1) in front of the HOA office during the unofficial Union Mill Elementary School Kiss and Ride, creating a safety issue for our children. The HOA explored potential solutions and engaged a traffic engineer to consult with the Fire Marshal, Fairfax County and VDOT to preserve the secondary Kiss and Ride in front of the 6201 Sandstone Way. Unfortunately, the cost of a structural solution is significant. As such, the fire lane in front of the HOA office will be enforced beginning with the upcoming school year.
What this means for you is the following:
1. Drop-off - Parents can still drop their children off in front of the HOA office in the morning, as no fire lane violation occurs, i.e., no vehicle is parked or “standing” in the fire lane.
2. Pick-up - Parents will no longer be permitted to park their vehicle and “stand” in the fire lane in front of the HOA office in the afternoon during school dismissal.
3. Parents can still utilize the office parking lot spaces during both drop-off and pick-up.
Additionally, you will see freshly painted fire lanes and two new crosswalks located at the entrance/exit of 6201 Sandstone Way, designed to promote pedestrian safety at the intersection of Sandstone Way and Springstone Drive.
The Board fully recognizes the inconvenience this creates for some, however, is obligated to comply with County regulations and must act in the best interest of the community. Safety is paramount. We ask for your assistance and cooperation as we adopt the new procedures. If this effort is unsuccessful, the execution (and expenditures) of the structural solution will be required to ensure compliance with Fairfax County fire lane regulations. Please help us keep our children safe.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the office (703)830-0411. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
